December Event: Saturday the 6th, 1-6pm
SHOP FOR CHANGE ON WORLD AIDS DAY
Momentum is donating 15% of the day's profits to help fight HIV & AIDS worldwide.
On December 6th, in commemoration of World AIDS Day, Momentum is hosting a special shopping event. 15% of every purchase will be donated to Embrace the World (ETW), a sub-group of Boulder County AIDS Project. World AIDS Day is considered a global day of action and you are invited to come shop for change with us. ETW committee members will be available to answer questions and share information on ETW funded projects which support HIV/AIDS prevention, mitigation and relief worldwide.
Last year, thanks to your support, we raised $1,000 on World AIDS Day for this wonderful cause! Let's raise even more money this year— save your holiday shopping for December 6th!
We have a special addition to our event this year! The Boulder chapter of UNICEF is offering Momentum customers sustainable gift wrapping. Proceeds from the sale of UNICEF's cloth gift bags directly supports children affected by HIV and AIDS.
Momentum founders, Jenny and Kevin Natapow, are featured in the 2009 Mother's Acting Up (MAU) engagement calendar, The Moment. "It was a tremendous honor to be included in this calendar filled with inspiring stories of activism. The 2009 theme, "the Moment", is especially fitting because it was an 'aha' moment that led to the birth of Momentum," explains Jenny Natapow.
The Moment is a weekly engagement calendar that also offers tools, information, weekly actions, and most importantly, portraits of people who inspire our own activism — from the mom next door, to new moms, to Isabel Allende, Paul Hawken, Mukhtar Mai and Julie Chavez Rodriguez. This calendar and guide is a tribute to pivotal moments of change, designed to incite your own year of Moments!
You can purchase the 2009 MAU calendar at Momentum or directly on MAU's website. To learn more about MAU click on the video link.
The MAU engagement calendar inspired Kathleen Sepeda, a loyal Momentum customer, to compose the following email…
To all of you wonderful, courageous People,
WOW! It is with immense gratitude that I sit here typing. My eyes full of tears. The calendar, to me, represents what we are.........as humans..........capable of. I jut purchased the calendar about an hour ago at Momentum. My groceries sit on the counter waiting to be put away, the phone calls, emails, laundry and errands became something in the background as I opened the calendar and started to read. I was drawn in and my heart so open. I feel full of hope and so inspired and I haven't yet had time to read all of the stories! It is deliciously gorgeous! A book of humanity and all of the gems that come out of injustice, hardship, life as it is sometimes................. and hope for change. Being the change you wish to see in the world. So much gratitude to all of you. My heart is full.
P.S. I am going back to Momentum to buy 18 copies to send to friends!!!

Fair Trade Month Celebration
We would like to thank everyone who came to our Halloween coffee, chocolate and cocoa tasting in celebration of Fair Trade Month. Congratulations to Cynthia Scott for winning a $75 Momentum gift certificate by correctly identifying the mystery chocolate flavor as: Fig, Fennel and Almond. Trick-or-Treaters young and old dove into Momentum's festivities, which also included apple bobbing this year.
Momentum participated in Fair Trade Month by being a local sponsor of the 2nd annual national Reverse Trick-or-Treating Campaign. We handed out 200 Fair Trade chocolate and information cards to interested Boulder residents, of all ages. Together we helped turn the traditional Halloween ritual on its head: The trick-or-treaters were the ones handing out the chocolate. Trick-or-treaters across the nation gave away more than a quarter million pieces of Fair Trade Certified chocolates.
Ryan Smith sent us this account of his Reverse Trick-or-Treating adventures:
"Jennifer Franz and I had a wonderful time buzzing around the neighborhood (as bees) and 'pollinating' the area with messages of hope and awareness. It was truly a wonderful experience to be able to go around and give out fair trade chocolate to folks. While it was at times challenging to get across the ideas behind what the philosophy of fair trade is all about…we found that almost everyone was very receptive to the 'reverse trick or treating' we were doing." shared Ryan Smith.
The Reverse Trick-or-Treating campaign is designed to raise awareness of the extensive use of exploited child labor in the cocoa fields of countries like Cote D'Ivoire, the persistent problems of poverty in cocoa-growing communities and the environmental damage caused from conventional cocoa farming. "It has been seven years since signatories to the 2001 Harkin-Engel Protocol acknowledged that child labor exists in the cocoa industry. They pledged to stop it then and it is unconscionable that these child labor abuses continue to this very day. As Americans, we can play a role in creating a more responsible chocolate market by choosing Fair Trade Certified chocolate year round," explained Yochanan Zakai, Co-op America's Fair Trade Program Coordinator.
