Our Business Practices
Momentum believes that businesses can be financially successful while behaving in a socially responsible and environmentally sensitive manner. Below are some of the ways we are trying to lessen our impact on the earth.
Renewable Wind Energy
Momentum uses 100% wind power through Xcel Energy's Windsource® program. Through this program, we offset our direct energy needs by purchasing wind credits for every kilowatt of power we use. Although we would love to have a wind generator of our own, by participating in this program we directly increase the local and national demand for wind power and reduce the production of the pollution that is causing global warming.
Green Construction
Momentum's space was built using green materials wherever possible- including a 100% Bamboo floor, recycled insulation made from old cotton clothing, ultra-low flow water fixtures, a dual flush toilet, reclaimed lumber for finish design work and our cash register was built from locally salvaged Ash trees. We also salvaged our granite countertops and sink from Resource 2000.
Using Recycled and Green Materials
Momentum uses recycled paper for all our professionally printed materials. We reuse and recycle all packaging materials that we receive from suppliers. We also welcome community members to stop by and use our recycled packaging materials for their shipping/moving needs, free of charge. When doing our own shipping, we reuse the same recycled materials that we offer to the community.
Green Facility Cleaning
Momentum uses green cleaning products to clean our entire store. We also make most of our environmentally friendly cleaners ourselves. Learn how to make your own green cleaning kit.
The Momentum Fund
Momentum pledges 1% of their sales revenues or 10% of their pretax profits, whichever is more, to The Momentum Fund, a not-for profit charitable fund dedicated to social justice and environmental causes locally and globally.
Fair Trade
Fair Trade is an internationally recognized equitable system of exchange that supports producers, communities, consumers, and the environment. Every item Momentum carries is crafted by the human hand, tells a story and provides employment opportunities for artisan groups around the world. All of our artisans and suppliers abide by Fair Trade standards.
Socially Responsible
At Momentum we envision a world where businesses promote economic, social and environmental justice and where engaged communities support these efforts. By integrating social and environmentally sound values into our daily practices, we are demonstrating that business can be a vehicle for social change. We are working to not be part of the problem by addressing the social and environmental issues that afflict humankind head-on.
Buying Locally
Momentum strives to support Fair Trade efforts globally, nationally and locally. A number of products in our store were handcrafted right here in Boulder by local artisans. We also purchase our business supplies and services from locally owned business, whenever possible. For more information of the benefits of buying from locally owned and operated businesses, visit Boulder Independent Business Alliance (BIBA) or The Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE).
Alternative Transportation Incentives
Momentum strongly encourages all employees to walk, bike or take the bus to work and we provide eco-passes to all full-time employees. When we do drive, our vehicles are powered by Biodiesel.
Memberships
Momentum is a proud member of Green America, Boulder Independent Business Alliance and Boulder County Going Local .
